Less than a week after the Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd commissioned an underpass at the Chandor railway crossing, the RVNL on Wednesday launched another underpass at Kamral village near Sanvordem Railway station.
RVNL officials said the underpass was constructed within five hours with the help of excavators and cranks to dig and place pre-fabricated slabs and concrete blocks providing much relief to the villagers.
Officials mentioned that one portion of the village, having 60-70 houses was landlocked between the railway line and a river for the last several years and people used to transport items by carrying them and crossing the rail line. “The only access to the road was a small water way under the rail track, which was used not only by pedestrians, but also by two-wheelers riders to approach the village road. With the construction of this underpass, the villagers shall now be able to take even cars to the landlocked part of the village”, the railways stated.
Railway officials said this is the third of the six underpasses to be constructed between Kulem and Margao stretch of the South Western Railway as part of the double tracking project. “The remaining three shall be launched on later dates, but within the month of February”, informed an official.
The underpass is 2.6 meters high, and 4.5 meters wide, adequate enough to accommodate small vehicles. During the launching operation, the local MLA and Minister Nilesh Cabral and members of the Panchayat were also present on the spot.
