As incessant rains continued to lash the State, several roads and low-lying areas in Bardez were inundated for hours giving a hard time to motorists and pedestrians as well.
There were incidents of a couple of tree falls but no major loss to life or property was reported from any part of the taluka.
In what has come to be an annual routine during the monsoon, some internal roads and low-lying fields in Guirim were submerged under water.
The road leading to the Guirim panchayat was completely under water making the panchayat office inaccessible.
Several low-lying fields across both sides of the National Highway (NH66) were also flooded due to the continuous rain for the last couple of days.
In some areas, people had a hard time negotiating their two-wheelers as internal roads were inundated almost with knee-deep water.
Former Guirim sarpanch Fondu Naik informed that so far things were manageable but if it continues to pour, then the water level could rise and it would be difficult for people to move out of their houses.
“This flooding problem in Guirim and surrounding areas will be resolved only if the entire Mapusa river is dredged properly. The rainwater from several water channels and nullahs are connected to the river and since the flow of the river has been blocked due to heavy silting and vegetation, the entire area gets flooded,” Naik said.
He said, last year, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had instructed the Water Resources Department to come out with a holistic plan to dredge the Mapusa river.
In the meanwhile, Mapusa fire station received calls of tree falls on roads and one on a house since early morning.
A coconut tree fell across a road in Anjuna while some reports of tree falls were reported from Siolim and Mapusa.
Fire officials informed that no major loss was reported from any of the incidents.
