The locals were alarmed on noticing that the contractor had partially buried the water body and open field, while carrying out foundation work for the project, which is opposite the KTC Complex at Chaudi.
“The open field has been buried with mud and we are greatly pained to see the damage caused to the lake, which has been existing for several years. We had even demanded for the beautification of this lake, which would have given a beautiful view across the KTC complex lying on the other side of the highway,” complained former Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Ramakant Naik Gaunkar.
Naik Gaonkar also complained that the construction of Ravindra Bhavan is being carried out in a haphazard manner and that too, in an ecologically sensitive zone.
“We will not allow this lake to be buried any further, but we want it to be beautified in a befitting manner, as it will be an added attraction to the cultural centre (Ravindra Bhavan). We will not hesitate to agitate in our efforts maintain the lake in its natural beauty,” added Naik Gaonkar. Other locals have even threatened to stop further work at the Ravindra Bhavan project.
When contacted, a supervisor at the construction site, however, claimed that the water body would not be buried and that, it would be retained in its original form once the construction is
completed.
But with a significant portion of the lake already buried with mud and construction dump, locals have been
left to wonder if the lake can be fully be restored to its
original form.
