Rawanfond bridge remains shut to traffic for 3rd day

MARGAO

Traffic on the Rawanfond bridge, connecting Aquem Power house junction to the Rawanfond circle remained shut for the third day on Thursday after the partial collapse of the road embankment due to the heavy pre-monsoon showers.

Margao police has informed that traffic on the road has not resumed given that the work is underway to strengthen the road embankment. “We will assess the situation on Friday after which appropriate decision will be taken on resumption of traffic on the bridge”, police informed.

Meanwhile, a group of citizens on Thursday inspected the Rawanfond bridge and the road embankment and termed as criminal negligence resulting in the damage caused to the embankment.

Blaming the contractor and the consultant engaged for the construction of the new Rawanfond bridge, the delegation pointed out that it takes simple common sense to understand the need for adequate protection to the approach road embankment of the existing bridge.

“The contractor dug open the retaining section of the existing approach road to construct the foundation for the new bridge, but didn't provide alternate protection to retain the mud filling of the old embankment", the delegation said.

The delegation led by former Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho has threatened to lodge a police complaint against the contractor and the consultant engaged for the bridge work.
