Collapse of a retaining wall due to a landslide in the heart of Margao city has posed danger to a housing complex, with residents sending SOS to the authorities to take urgent measures to save the debris from crashing down on the residential building.
Responding to the situation, the District Disaster Management Authority has issued an order directing the authorities to immediately commence work for the full reconstruction and reinforcement of the damaged retaining wall to eliminate any potential hazards to life and property.
Local residents of Damodar Chambers told the media that the collapse of a retaining wall due to a landslide has posed danger to the residential building. They have called for urgent measures to rebuild the retaining wall, before it comes crashing down on the building inhabited by residents.
The locals pointed out that a landslide had taken place at the spot in 2023 and the area was exposed to the vagaries of nature. “Timely measures by the authorities in the last two years would have saved the present situation”, a local resident pointed out.
Meanwhile, district Collector and Chairperson of South district disaster management Authority, Egna Cleetus has issued an order for the immediate Measures for Reconstruction and Precautionary Safety Retaining Wall near Damodar Chambers, behind Cartier Showroom, Margao.
Saying that current condition of the wall poses a serious risk to nearby properties and public safety, thus necessitating urgent preventive and corrective action, the Collector has directed the Executive Engineer, Sub-Div -III, WD III. WRD, Gogol to immediately commence work for the full reconstruction and reinforcement of the damaged retaining wall to eliminate any potential hazards to life and property.
The WRD has been told to implement all necessary precautionary measures at the site with immediate effect, including cordoning off the affected area, erection of warning signage, and installation of temporary support structures if required and coordinate with local municipal authorities for seamless and expedited execution of the above-mentioned works.
