In the last five years, rice production in Goa has shown fluctuations but an overall increase. Data provided by the Minister for Agriculture, Ravi Naik, reveals that in the financial year 2023-24, Goa produced a total of 94,611 metric tonnes (MT) of rice. This includes 67,698 MT from the Kharif season and 26,913 MT from the Rabi season.
Apart from rice, Goa’s major crops include pulses, groundnut, sugarcane, cashewnut, coconut, arecanut, mango, and banana.
The total rice requirement in Goa for the financial year 2023-24 was 49,087.314 MT. This demand is primarily met through supplies from the Government of India via the Food Corporation of India, with rice distributed through the Department of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs.
Regarding rice milling, Goa hosts three high-capacity rice mills. Despite this, there is a recognised need for additional milling capacity to better support local rice production and processing.
Export details for Goan rice were not available, as rice is not a notified commodity for such data collection.
