MARGAO
Finally, there’s good news in store for the 12 beleaguered Margao Municipal daily wage workers in their over half-a-decade old struggle for regularisation of their services.
A day after the workers threatened self-immolation, Margao Municipal Chief Officer Madhu Narvekar issued orders confirming their services with effect from 2019. Though the struggle is far from over as the pending dues of the workers are yet to be released, the MMC Chief Officer has issued the pay fixation order for the 12 workers on Friday.
The Chief Officer also issued an addendum on Friday stating that the persons appointed as per an order dated February 13, 2026 to the post of workers may be read as appointed with effect from December 27, 2019.
The order issued by the Margao Municipal Chief Officer marks the culmination of the long drawn struggle by these 12 workers, whose services were regularised by the civic body, only to be kept on hold for reasons unknown since 2019.
With no relief from the civic body, the workers moved the High Court, which in 2025 directed the MMC to regularise their services. After non-compliance, they filed a contempt plea, prompting the Chief Officer to undertake implementation.
