In a major relief for citizens of Belagavi and the commuters from Goa, the long-closed road stretch from the Bank of India connecting to the old PB Road is set to reopen. The 40-foot-wide road, located in front of Shivasrushti, had remained shut for nearly a year following a major land compensation dispute involving Rs 20 crore.
Goan visitors wanting to travel towards Central Bus Stand of Belagavi city or beyond can now take a turn at the Goaves Circle to proceed to this road.
According to official sources, District In Charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi had taken the initiative to address the long-pending issue after repeated requests from citizens.
Earlier, an 80-ft wide road was constructed without adhering to the alignment specified in the City Development Plan (CDP) and without proper land acquisition, which led to encroachments on residential, commercial, and industrial properties. Affected landowners moved the High Court, demanding compensation. The court ruled in their favour, directing the Belagavi City Corporation to pay damages amounting to nearly Rs 20 crore.
Following the court’s order, the Corporation returned the disputed land to the owners in September 2024, leading to a complete closure of the road. The move severely disrupted traffic in Shahapur and nearby areas also putting Goan visitors to huge inconvenience.
After continuous follow-ups by citizens and discussions during the municipal corporation’s general body meeting, a new solution has now been finalized. As per the approved CDP layout, the road will be reopened as a 40-foot-wide route.
Municipal Commissioner Shubha B. is overseeing the ongoing survey process, and once it’s completed, physical clearance and reopening work will begin. This long-awaited development is expected to ease traffic congestion and bring relief to Goan visitors and Shahapur residents who have faced daily inconvenience for nearly a year.
