Amidst a rise in traffic violations by tourists using rental vehicles followed by discussions among stakeholders to clamp down on such violators, the Traffic Department has decided to enforce rules by requiring these clients to sign an 'undertaking.'
The department has issued 10 directives each for rent-a-car and rent-a-bike users to enhance safety. Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Rahul Gupta pointed out the heightened risk linked with these vehicles citing negligence by users and unfamiliarity with Goan roads.
The undertaking copies will be distributed to rental agencies to ensure that their respective clients adhere to road safety regulations.
SP Gupta stressed that strict enforcement measures will be implemented, with penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment for violators.
“The vehicle users will have to fill in personal details with their signature on the undertaking. One copy will be retained by the rental operator/agency and its copy will be kept with the user,” he said.
Traffic inspectors have been tasked with overseeing compliance and obtaining weekly reports from rental agencies besides awareness about traffic discipline.
