A notorious history-sheeter, known for his involvement in a series of chain-snatching cases, has finally been apprehended by the police.
The accused, identified as Ansar Narangi alias Lagati, has been implicated in the crime registered across seven different police jurisdictions within the State.
His arrest was possible through meticulous technical surveillance as he was captured on CCTV cameras while committing a crime along with his associate in Bicholim on August 14.
According to the information shared by the police, he was accompanied by another unknown person on a motorbike and camped outside a residence.
“Seizing an opportune moment when a woman emerged from the house to pluck flowers, one of them forcibly approached her and snatched her mangalsutra which is valued at Rs 1.95 lakh,” Superintendent of Police (North Goa) Nidhin Valsan said.
The identification of Ansar as a suspect was established through the CCTV footage, which was cross-verified with inputs provided by local informants and credible sources.
The victim’s description of the accused that he wore a cap, sporting a thick beard and moustache, and wearing black slippers matched Ansar’s appearance. Valsan said that Ansar was subsequently traced at Raia, Margao from where he was brought to the Bicholim police station for a thorough interrogation.
“Ansar admitted to having committed the snatching incident along with his accomplice at Bicholim on August 14,” the officer revealed.
Ansar, aged 34 from Margao, had also committed similar chain snatching cases reported within the jurisdictions of Curchorem and Canacona police stations, where he is now wanted for investigation.
The further investigation exposed Ansar’s criminal history at the Fatorda PS and that he was arrested previously for a range of offenses registered at Maina Curtorim, Fatorda, Margao and Mapusa PS.
