besides other agencies to complete road digging and restore all the roads in the village ahead of the feast of Our Lady of Rosary scheduled in mid-October.
The villagers have also told the authorities to work out a solution to streamline the traffic scenario at the Navelim Church junction during peak school hours by re-opening the subway and putting into operation the traffic signals.
At a public grievance meeting held at the panchayat hall, which was attended by Sarpanchas and panch members of both Navelim and Telaulim villages, besides officials of various agencies, the Navelim MLA said the agencies have been told to complete road digging work in the next 10 days and restore the roads before the commencement of the Novenas of the feast of Our Lady of Rosary.
"I have told the officials of PWD roads and sewerage to complete road digging by the month end so that other departments take up the restoration work ahead of the Our Lady of Rosary feast. This mess in the village has been going on since the last two years and half and is still continuing. One person has lost his life and many accidents have taken place on the roads," he added.
Villagers, including the panch members were an agitated lot since the agencies have been digging roads and leaving them without restoration. In fact, villagers demanded that the panchayat bodies lodge a FIR against the cellular company for taking up road digging without any permissions from the local bodies.
"It has now been decided that any agency, which want to start road digging, should approach the panchayat body and after
consulting the people take up road digging. Otherwise, there will be no end to the destruction," he said.
The PWD, water supply has also been told to lay the 300 mm new line from Davorlim to Navelim by the month end so that there will be no more road digging from October.
The issue of sewage discharge in the Sal rivulet at Dongorim and Mandopa also figured at the meetings.
People also raised the issue of soakpits and septic tanks coming up just 50 meters away from the rivulet, apprehending contamination.
The Navelim MLA also appealed to the village NGOs to be vigilant and report case of sewage discharge into the river Sal or the rivulet, promising to take action against the unscrupulous people by disconnecting their water and power supply

Darkness on bridge has come
handy to anti-socials: Luizinho
MARGAO: The issue over the non-functional lights at the Telaulim-Varca bridge came up for discussion at Navelim public grievance forum meeting, with Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro saying the officials have been successful in giving a big encouragement for drug addicts, drunkards and other anti-social elements from making merry under the cover of darkness.
"The bridge has been lying in darkness for the last 5-6 years for want of repairs and maintenance of the street lights. The lights are not functioning because the PWD has to pay huge arrears to the electricity, prompting the power department to disconnect power supply. This situation has only given an encouragement to drug addicts and drunkards to make merry at the bridge. There's been instances where people were attacked by anti-social elements," he said.
To tide over the problem, it was suggested that the PWD clear the arears so that the power department takes over the upkeep and maintenance of the Telaulim-Varca illumination.
