Resumption of Vasco-Dona Paula ferry service in pipeline: Minister

MARGAO

Saying that Goa had a rich history of inland navigation, the River Navigation Minister Subhash Phaldesai on Wednesday said his department will embark on a major plan to link places, including Vasco and Dona Paula via the ferry services.

He said the plan is not only aimed at de-congesting the roads but will also give a big boost to tourism. The Minister, however, pointed out that the ferry service will be reviewed by taking the local fishermen into confidence so that the project does not hamper their traditional activity.

“Resumption of the Vasco to Dona Paula ferry service is in the pipeline. I am not saying the service will start soon, but we have taken measures to mobilize the vessels to ply between the two points. We will also take the Tourism department into confidence while implementing the proposal to develop inland navigation”, he said.

The Minister said that speed boats in the State's inland waters will give a boost to tourism while reminding that Goa had the best inland navigation network in the past.

Phaldesai, who also holds the Social Welfare portfolio, said that he is in the process of setting up a mechanism, wherein the different categories of pensioners receive their pension without delays.

On Archives and archaeology, the Minister said the department will embark on an exercise to protect and preserve the records via digitization. He also said that the department of archaeology will also revive the archaeological sites, including temples and also preserve the rich cultural heritage for posterity.
