Rising dengue cases have rung alarm bells amongst health authorities in Salcete, with the number of cases showing no signs of abating, and the number of patients admitted in Hospicio and private hospitals registering a rise with each passing day.
If Margao MLA Digambar Kamat came out with a startling revelation that around 10 suspected dengue cases are admitted at Hospicio, authorities at Hospicio said the hospital has so far treated around 60 patients since September.
What’s disturbing to note is that with the growing number of suspected dengue cases referred to Hospicio, the hospital, which has been facing an acute bed shortage, has been overstretched further to accommodate these patients.
“Around 10 patients from Margao, Fatorda, and villages of Salcete are admitted to Hospicio for dengue treatment. The situation is alarming and one way to keep dengue at bay is to ensure that each individual and household takes care of his surroundings,” Kamat told students of T B Cunha HS, Aquem at the cleanliness drive organised by the South district Congress Committee and the school on Thursday.
Inquiries conducted by The Goan revealed that dengue patients admitted at Hospicio has indeed registered a steep rise in recent days.
Sources at Hospicio pointed out that around 60 dengue patients were being treated at the government hospital, with around 49 admitted after they were screened and found positive for dengue. The remaining were admitted after being referred by private practitioners.
Sources in the know said many a private hospital and nursing home has been playing host to dengue patients since the last two months, ever since there was an outbreak of dengue in the city, beginning with the areas of Gogol, Borda and Arlem, with the menace gradually spreading to the Madel, Pajifond and other areas.
