RO Canacona ready to hold polls for 59 wards in 7 VPs

CANACONA

A total of 28,659 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise to elect 59 panch members spread over seven panchayats of Canacona taluka.
Addressing a news conference, Canacona Returning Officer Manoj Korgaonkar informed the administration is all set and ready to conduct the panchayat polls for all seven panchayats in Canacona Taluka and elaborate arrangements have been made to conduct the polls in a free, fair and peaceful manner.
He informed a Special Cell (counter) has been opened in the Conference Hall to accept nominations of the aspiring candidates to contest Panchayat polls, while nomination forms and electoral rolls have been made available.
“As the code of conduct is already in force, 2 flying squads are already activated, while the training session for 300 polling staff is scheduled on Thursday and Friday at the conference hall in the Dy Collectorate Office,” said Korgaonkar.
Each of the 59 polling stations in the seven panchayats will have five polling staff, including the presiding officer and 3 polling officers), and police personnel.
Seven Sector Magistrates have also been appointed in each of the seven panchayats to oversee the free conduct of polls.
“So far, no sensitive polling stations have been identified and there is no indication from anywhere regarding boycott of polls by the electorate for any reason,” said Korgaonkar.

10 nominations filed in Canacona
CANACONA: Ten candidates have filed their nominations for elections to the panchayats in Canacona taluka.
On Monday, only one candidate filed a nomination for the ST reserved Ward 4 in Shrishthal, while on Tuesday, Agonda outgoing Sarpanch Badal Naikgaunkar filed his nomination for Ward 5, while another candidate filed for Ward 7 (ST reserved) for the same panchayat.
On Wednesday, seven nominations were filed and they were 2 in Agonda (Wards 1, 3), 2 in Gaondongrim (Wards 2, 9), one each in Loliem-Polem (Ward 3), Poinguinim (Ward 7) and Shrishthal (Ward 4).
