Asserting that Romi Konkani has been discriminated against in the Official Language Act, Romi script lovers and activists have resolved to knock the doors of the Linguistic Minorities Cell in Delhi for justice.
Romi script lovers and activists have further resolved to embark on a mass mobilization exercise to induct members at the village level in support of the movement to seek justice for Konkani in Roman script.
Around 25-30 Romi Konkani script lovers met in the city here on Saturday to discuss the status of Konkani in Roman script and chalk out a plan of action to take the movement to end the discrimination against Roman script forward.
The meeting has set up a four-member panel, besides a permanent member committee to take the battle forward.
Konkani Roman Lipi activist Jose Salvador Fernandes later informed the media that it was decided to approach the Linguistic Minorities Cell in Delhi. He said the meeting has decided to take the movement forward by approaching the Cell under Article 29 A of the Constitution dealing with language.
It was further decided at the meeting to seek legal recourse in order to bestow the status Romi Konkani deserves in the State of Goa.
The meeting attended by intellectuals and people committed to the promotion and protection of Romi Konkani has vowed to take the movement forward. “The people are with us in the battle to take the Romi Konkani movement forward. Hence, it has been decided to embark on mass mobilization of the people. To begin with, 15-25 member committees will be set up at the village level to take the awareness to the people. We are confident that involving people at the grass roots will give a big boost to the movement”, Salvador added.
Dominic Fernandes expressed his satisfaction that people, including intellectuals have responded to the call by attending the meeting. “Our movement has evoked response across the globe. I appeal to the people staying abroad to request their family members back home to attend the meetings convened in support of Romi Konkani”, he said.
This is the second meeting held by the Konkani Roman Lipi supporters and activists even as the third meeting has been planned early July to take the movement forward.
