The Rotaract Club of Vasco on Thursday made history of sorts by distributing around 40,000 free paper bags to vendors to ensure a plastic-free Saptah.

It is for the first time in the history of Saptah that such a huge quantity of paper bags have been made available and distributed free to the vendors, claimed the club.

According to President of Rotaract Club of Vasco Rohan Bandekar, the club had procured these paper bags from various government schools in Mormugao.

“The club had earlier organised a training session for students of the government school and had trained students to make these paper bags.”

“All 40,000 bags were procured from students, of which students of the Government School at Zuarinagar contributed 9,000 bags in 15 days.”

“The principal of the Zuarinagar school called us to pick the paper bags as the office premises were full of paper bags. We had not expected the students could give us so many bags. We have now decided to give away prizes to students and trophies to the school,” acknowledged Bandekar.

Speaking to the media, the Club Secretary Anant Prabhu said the Rotaract Club of Vasco always wanted to do something for Vasco.

“This figure of 40,000 paper bags has definitely inspired us and we look forward to achieving a target of around 1 lakh paper bags which could be distributed free of cost to vendors at Saptah. We can definitely and proudly say that each and every student has contributed to a plastic-free Saptah and a plastic-free Vasco,” said Prabhu.
