Cash worth Rs 1.92 lakh was burgled from the Sattari Taluka Farmers Cooperative Society’s head office at Valpoi in the wee hours of Friday.
According to Valpoi police, the incident took place sometime at about 2.30 am, when a burglar broke open the lock of the head office and stole Rs 1.92 lakh in cash from the clerk’s drawer. The incident came to light when the staff arrived for duty on Friday morning.
A police complaint was later lodged by the Society’s Vice Chairman Panduranga Gawas along with the other directors at the Valpoi police station.
A police team led by PSI Gaurish Malik later visited the spot and conducted the panchanama.
Police Inspector Shivram Vaigankar told reporters that CCTV footage had revealed a person moving in a suspicious manner in the area. “Investigations are in progress and we hope to identify the accused soon,” said PI Vaigankar.
The Society Vice Chairman Pandurang Gawas said under normal circumstances, small amounts of cash are normally stored in the head office, but was unclear why the staff had failed to deposit the large amount of cash in the banking counter.
Meanwhile, a special meeting of the Board of Directors has been convened on Saturday evening to take stock of the burglary and to consider action against the staff
for the negligence.
