Rs 20 cr to be spent on Mapusa market redevelopment project

Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua D'Souza while chairing a joint meeting for the proposed redevelopment plan of the Mapusa market at the Mapusa Municipal Hall.

The State government plans to take up redevelopment of the Mapusa market building through the Goa State Urban Development Agency.

The proposed project, which will cost Rs 20 crore and will be undertaken in three phases, was discussed in a meeting chaired by Deputy Speaker Joshua D'Souza.

MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal, MMC Vice Chairperson Prakash Bhivshet, Chief Officer Chandrakant Shetkar, Architect Ashwini Kumar Prabhu, President of the Traders Association Jitendra Phalari, Secretary Siddhesh Raut and office bearers, President of the All Goa Traders Federation Narayan Karekar and office bearers, BHAP Board President Yogesh Khedekar, office bearers of the Mapusa Bakers, Mapusa Full Market, All Goa FMCG, Telecom Distributors Association, corporators, municipal engineers, municipal inspectors and officials of GSUDA were present at the meeting.

A video demonstration of the market redevelopment plan was shown at the meeting by GSUDA.

Deputy Speaker Joshua D'Souza said the project is being taken up as work on underground power lines has been completed.

“The work will be done in three phases. The first phase will involve work worth Rs 10 crore, which includes the entrance building of the Municipal market and the Shakuntala statue. The second and third phases, each worth Rs 5 crore, will include the two halves of the Shakuntala statue and the market building at the back, and then the roof and repair work of the remaining buildings,” D'Souza said.
