The situation aggravated to such an extent that Sangolda Sarpanch Premanand Kochrekar was compelled to adjourn the gram sabha for a while and call the police to control the situation. The sarpanch resumed the proceedings upon arrival of the police.
Kochrekar said the excise department had given permission to open a bar and restaurant at Sangolda in 2013-14. "The owner of the bar and restaurant made an application to the excise department seeking permission to start micro brewery in the same premises and the panchayat issued provisional NOC for it," said the sarpanch.
The residents got furious over the sarpanch's statement and questioned him as to how the panchayat issued permission for the bar and restaurant in the vicinity of Mae de Deus Chapel.
The residents said the bar and restaurant is within 100 metres of the chapel and the chapel had raised objection for issuing licence to the bar as it would affect sanctity of the religious ceremonies conducted at the chapel. Inspite of objection how the panchayat issued permission for the bar, they questioned.
Samson Dias and Sandra Fernandes demanded immediate revocation of the permission granted by the panchayat to the said bar. After heated discussions, a resolution was adopted demanding revocation of permission given to the bar and restaurant.
Resolutions objecting to nationalisation of Goan rivers and transportation of coal were also adopted. , while issues regarding garbage collection on door-to-door basis, construction of footpaths, streetlights, etc, were also
discussed.
Earlier, Sarpanch Kochrekar welcomed the gathering. Panchayat secretary Pooja Gawas read the minutes of the last held on July 30, while Deputy Sarpanch Jalisha Tulaskar proposed the vote of thanks.
