Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha president Sulakshana Sawant on Friday declared that the ruling party as well as Goa's public deserves the credit for Goa's number one ranking on the recently unveiled Gender Vulnerability Index (GVI). As against the national average of 0.5314, Goa scored 0.649 points.
NGO Plan India announced its first ever state-wise ranking on GVI, which was scaled on the criteria of girl child and women safety and protection, poverty, health and education. The data was based on the study of around 160 indicators across the country. The rankings were released on November 1.
Speaking at BJP office in Panaji, Sawant stated, "It is the BJP government's flagship schemes such as Griha Aadhaar and Laadli Laxmi which have empowered women and have ensured financial freedom of women in Goa along with central
government schemes such as Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao."
She further claimed that the ranking is an answer to all questions posed by the opposition about the state government's commitment towards ensuring safety of women in Goa.
Goa has been ranked as the first on GVI and safety of women, fifth in women's literacy, sixth in women's health sector and eighth in case of financial freedom enjoyed by women.
Parrikar thanks WCD ministry
PANAJI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar thanked the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare for releasing the Gender Vulnerability Index drafted by Plan International, in which Goa was ranked as the number
one state.
In a letter addressed to Union Minister for WCD Maneka Gandhi, Parrikar wrote, "Goa's ranking as the number one state on GVI is a testimony to the state's efforts in making it safe for women; it also reflects the high gender sensitivity of the people of Goa. The report is very encouraging and I assure you that we will strive further for attaining unmatched standards on issues of gender safety and women welfare."
