Of late, the Central jail at Colvale has been fraught with controversies with staffers being suspended for involvement in drugs and helping under trials.
Six staffers had been suspended in different incidents -- for letting out convicts on parole without properly cross checking documents. Three jail guards were also caught red-handed supplying tobacco products to prisoners while another jail guard was caught entering the prison with ganja and charas in his shoes.
In July 2016, notorious gangster Ashpaq Ubbass Bengre of Betim was allegedly stabbed to death by a prisoner under trial at the jail.
Bengre was reportedly reading a newspaper outside his cell when the accused Karbotkar attacked him with a sharp object on his head, neck and hands in the presence of other prisoners and a jail guard.
