The women alleged that jeweller Bhimappa Chalvadi had collected their gold after promising loans at an interest rate of just 0.65 per cent. They claimed that despite repaying the loans in full, he refused to return their pledged ornaments.
According to the victims, two FIRs had already been filed at Mormugao Police Station. However, they alleged that no effective action had been taken and that they were informed the jeweller was absconding.
Frustrated over the alleged inaction, the women said they decided to trace the jeweller themselves and brought him to Vasco Police Station, demanding immediate action and recovery of their gold.
The victims further alleged that the jeweller claimed he had "police in his pocket" and operated an unauthorised banking-style system by offering loans at low interest rates. They also alleged that he had acquired expensive properties while failing to return their gold.
