Salcete Excise issues notices to liquor outlets, owners baffled

An exercise by the Salcete Excise office to issue notices on liquor outlets along the NH-17 triggered panic amongst the owners on Wednesday, leaving the liquor and bar owners to wonder whether the government intends to crack a whip against the outlets as per the Supreme Court order.

Excise officials tried to allay apprehensions saying that the department is only issuing notices on those outlets which would not be done in March last.
Sources said that notices were issued to bar and liquor outlets along the NH-17 from Cuncolim to Navelim, raising many an eyebrow amongst those depending on the sale of liquor.
Bar owners from the commercial capital also tried to find out whether they would be the next target of the Excise sleuths, though there were no reports of the bar owners receiving the notices in the latest exercise.
The Salcete Excise exercise also assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of reports that the government would bail out liquor outlets located at a radius of 500 meters away from the national and state highway.
