Saligao gram sabha witnessed heated arguments over the issue of widening of Porvorim-Saligao road and alleged foul odour coming from the garbage treatment plant in the area.

Saligao Sarpanch Lafira Gomes read out a letter from Housing Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar advising the panchayat to obtain a no objection certificate (NOC) from concerned landlords for Porvorim-Saligao road widening. The minister also asked the panchayat to convince people that no houses or compound walls will be demolished for road widening.

A resident took objection to the contents of the said letter and stated that the Saligao village being a heritage village and hence no damage should be done to old houses there. After a heated discussion, a resolution was adopted by the villagers opposing the widening of Porvorim-Saligao road.

Another resident Mario Cordeiro mentioned that garbage treatment plant at Saligao is not operating to its full capacity and that foul odour is emanating from the plant. He also demanded that the panchayat should take necessary action in the matter.

Sarpanch Gomes suggested that a group of villagers should visit the garbage treatment plant on January 26 and meet the concerned officials and discuss the issues with them. To which the villagers agreed.

In regard to stray dogs the sarpanch mentioned that panchayat has entered into an agreement with Goa Animal Welfare Society requesting to take care of stray dogs.

The sarpanch also mentioned that a shed will be constructed next to the panchayat hall for the fisherwomen to sell fish .Once this shed is ready they will not be allowed to sell fish by the side of the road.
