The Saligao Primary Health Centre (PHC) has reported 19 confirmed cases of dengue in July.
With these 19 cases, the total dengue cases detected by the Saligao PHC has risen to 37 cases since January.
When contacted, Deputy Director of Health Services Dr Kalpana Mahatme said there has been upsurge in dengue cases in Saligao constituency, as compared to Porvorim constituency.
“Most cases of dengue have been reported at Guirim and PDA colony in Porvorim, which fall under the Saligao PHC. In comparison, the Porvorim PHC has reported only two dengue cases in July and the total cases from January to July are only seven cases,” said Dr Mahatme.
“Once suspected dengue cases are reported, they are tested for confirmation at Sub-District hospital at Chicalim, Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim, South Goa district hospital at Margao and North Goa district hospital at Mapusa.”
To contain the spread of dengue cases, Dr Mahatme said the PHCs at Saligao and Porvorim send their teams house to house to create awareness among residents and collect sample of patient with fever.
“Besides, PHCs are also undertaking fogging where suspected dengue cases have been reported. The cooperation of residents is very important to contain the spread of dengue said Dr Mahatme.
Porvorim-based medical practitioner Dr Vinay Prabhu Dessai said there have been substantial cases of dengue in Saligao and Porvorim constituencies.
“Every day, I get 1-2 suspected cases of dengue in my clinic. It is the duty of residents to maintain cleanliness in their houses and their surroundings. They should not allow water to stagnate at any cost. The primary health centres should conduct awareness drives especially in the residential areas of labourers,” said Dr Prabhu Dessai.
