Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Wednesday demanded special trains between Vasco and Vailankani on account of the annual feast on September 8.
Salkar submitted the memorandum to Vasco Railway Station Manager Ramdas Gudemane in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues, Councillors Shami Salkar, Deepak Naik, Girish Borker and others.
Speaking to reporters, Salkar said many people from Vasco had approached him stating the need of special trains for the Vailankani Feast.
"We all know about the feast of Vailankani on September 8 and for the last 20 years, there has been a train service for this holy pilgrimage. However, the service was discontinued during the Covid Pandemic. I have submitted a memorandum to the Railways to reintroduce the special trains service to facilitate Goans for the religious pilgrimage.”
“I have even suggested dates and we can have trains leaving from Vasco on August 27, September 2 and September 6, while trains can return from Vailankani to Vasco on August 29, September 3 and September 8. We have also asked the railways to organise additional pillows and blankets for all pilgrims using these special trains so that pilgrims do not face any hardships," said Salkar.
MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said the special trains would benefit a lot of Goans attending the novena and annual feast at Vailankani.
"The Railways have agreed to accept the request and introduce the special trains. Many pilgrims have complained of lack of proper service and hence, Salkar has also requested the Railways to take steps to offer the best service possible to our Goans who will be attending the feast of Vailankani on September 8," said Rodrigues.
