POVORIM

Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has said work to augment the capacity of the Porvorim power sub-station has been completed with the installation of an additional 10 MVA transformer and the laying of underground cable.
He was speaking at Saloi in Salvador-do-Mundo after commissioning the 10 MVA power transformer and inaugurating work on the first phase of work to lay underground cabling. Chief Electricity Engineer Stephen Fernandes, ZP member Kavita Naik and former panch members of Penha de Franca, Salvador do Mundo and Socorro panchayat were present on the occasion.
“This project to augment the capacity of the Porvorim power substation was conceived in 2017, but the contractors faced lot of difficulties due to objections from people regarding road digging work. However, the electricity department continued its efforts which were supported by the panch members and completed the first phase of laying the underground cable,” said Khaunte.
“Preparation of estimates for the second phase of work to lay the underground cable is in the pipeline and once it gets approval from finance department, work will start. Once the work of second phase is completed, power problems of Porvorim constituency will be reduced substantially,” said Khaunte.
Chief Electricity Engineer Stephen Fernandes said the department could complete the first phase of laying underground cables because of the support of panch members and the locals.
He said the areas covered under the first phase are Porvorim plateau, Defence colony, Torda, Vijaynagar, Housing Board Colony, Pundaliknagar, P&T Colony and Azad Bhavan.
“The entire low-tension network on transformers associated with the Porvorim Power substation has been converted to an underground system. Four transformers have been augmented from 200 KVA to 400 KVA and 10 transformers from 100 KVA to 200 KVA. This augmentation of the capacity of the sub-station has been done to cater to the present and future demand for power of Porvorim constituency,” said Fernandes.
