Sardinha, Reginaldo emerge contenders for leading party

Names sent to Cong high command in Delhi

PANAJI
Names of Congress MP Francisco Sardinha and Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco have been sent to the party's Delhi high command by Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao for the position of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President.

It is learned, Rao has given more preference to Sardinhafor the top post.

As per information received from sources, Congress observer Prakash Rathod, Mansur Khan and Gundu Rao held a meeting on Thursday to deliberate on the issue.

In the meeting, the discussion was largely centred on the present political scenario in Goa, the upcoming election and the alliance with Goa Forward Party.

Considering these three main important issues and the demand for leadership change within the party, the three had a lengthy discussion and recommended the names of Sardinha and Reginaldo to replace Chodankar as GPCC chief. Earlier, Luizinho Faleiro, under whose leadership Congress won many seats in 2017, was suggested for the top position by Gundu Rao. However, Faleiro declined to take up the post, prompting the Goa desk in-charge to suggest names of the two heavyweights from Curtorim.

However, Sardinha and Reginaldo have declined to comment. The latter said it was not right to say anything at this stage. Let the official declaration come first, he added.

However, Chodankar's supporters are claiming that he will retain the position of GPCC president. "We are confident that Girish will be retained as GPCC president," said Amarnath Panajikar, General Secretary of Congress.
