A visibly upset chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai said she would now knock the doors of the South Goa District Magistrate to call a meet of the village panchayats and officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board, besides the Directorate of Panchayats to deliberate and discuss the issue of waste dumping along the city border.
Of the nine sarpanchas invited for Friday’s meeting, only the sarpanch of Aquem-Baixo, Sharon Quadros made it a point to attend. Amongst the officials, a lone PWD official turned up for the meeting in the chamber of the chairperson, leaving Babita with no option than to cancel the meeting. She wondered why the sarpanchas of Colva, Benaulim, Curtorim, Davorlim, Rumdamol, Navelim, Arlem and Nuvem have not turned out for the meeting when they were intimated in advance.
“It appears that while the city bears the brunt of the waste dumping along the municipal border, with the waste finding its way from the villages, the panchayats appear to be not interested in joining hands in addressing the issue,” she said.
“I was shocked to find a lone police sub-inspector and PWD official turning up for the meeting when the civic body had invited a host of officials heading various departments,” she said.
