Overcoming several challenges, the Sateri Kelbai Self-Help Group (SHG) from Ladfe-Bicholim cultivated around 30 kg of marigold flowers on a 1,200-sq-metre plot, with support from local villagers.

SHG members Pradnya Parab and Vishakha Malik decided to take up marigold cultivation after receiving around 1,400 seeds through the Rural Development Agency (RDA). However, they initially faced a shortage of land.

Villagers Sakharam Malik and Satyavan Malik came forward to allow the women to use their 1,200-sq-metre plot and also helped them establish the marigold garden.

The women prepared the seedlings towards the end of July, and the plants began flowering about a month later. With Ganesh Chaturthi approaching, the group harvested and sold around 30 kg of flowers at various locations in Bicholim. As it was their first season, the flowers were sold at Rs 60 per kg.

“Marigold flowers remain fresh on the plant for a maximum of four to five days. Since the flowers wilt quickly, they must be harvested and sold in a timely manner,” said Vishakha Malik.

Bicholim MLA Chandrakant Shetye visited the field and commended the women for their initiative, assuring them of support for the venture.

Marigolds are in high demand in Goa during Navratri, with large quantities currently imported from outside the State. The group’s locally grown flowers are therefore expected to find a ready market during the upcoming festive season.

Locals said government support through proper planning, guidance and assistance could encourage more women’s groups and SHGs to take up marigold cultivation.
