The Special Leave Petition filed by Goa challenging the Mhadei Tribunal’s award granting neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra States a share of the river’s waters is expected to be heard on Monday on the question of admission in the Supreme Court.
Senior Counsel Arvind Datar will hold Goa’s brief in the Apex Court after Additional Solicitor General Atmaram Nadkarni was divested of it by the State government, said sources in the office of Goa’s Advocate General, Devidas Pangam. After a prolonged arbitration on the dispute of claims over the river waters between the three states, the Tribunal around a year ago had granted 13.42 TMC of water to Karnataka, including 3.9 TMC for diversion into the depleted Malaprabha river basin.
Goa is contesting the diversion of waters by Karnataka, saying it would hurt the unique and fragile ecosystems along either banks of the river’s nearly 50-kilometer course in the State before it flows into the Arabian Sea.
The river feeds the unique Khazan eco-systems of Goa along its banks.
