A portion of a scrapyard at Merces caught fire early Saturday morning.
Luckily, workers noticed the fire and alerted the fire services, who reached the spot and helped extinguish it before it could spread to the entire scrapyard.
Six fire tenders from Panaji and one fire tender from Old Goa were used to extinguish the fire and it took nearly three hours and over 32,500 litres of water in the operation.
Sub Officer S M Raut led the Panaji team and he was assisted by Hawaldar K C Naik, eight firemen and two driver operators.
The Old Goa fire team was led by Sub Officer R D Parab and he was assisted by four firemen and a driver
operator.
Though the exact cause of the fire could not be determined, the workers raised suspicion that a cigarette butt could have been the culprit as they said some persons have drinks near the scrapyard on a regular basis.
Incidentally, this scrapyard sprung up recently after scrapyards in the nearby fields were demolished by government authorities on directives of the High Court.
