Dispite rise in patients, hospital needs more gynecologists and orthopaedics

Though there has been an increase in the number of patients visiting the hospital, which was inaugurated on December 19, 2012, the government is yet to appoint an orthopedic specialist and raise the number of gynecologists.
According to information received from the hospital, the number of OPD registrations have shown a steady rise, from 99,500 in 2013, to 1,19,730 in 2014, 1,22,522 in 2015 and 1.51 lakh in 2016.
Sources informed that the government has failed to appoint permanent orthopedic specialist in the hospital, due to which patients of accidental cases are routinely shifted to the GMC.
“Many times, relatives of patients confront us if there is no orthopedic specialist,” said a hospital staff employee.
“About 80 deliveries take place in the hospital every month, but the hospital lacks sufficient number of gynecologists. Presently, only one doctor is holding the charge, while another doctor is on CCL,” the employee added.
Hospital sources said there is a need of at least three more gynecologists in the hospital.
Then health minister Laxmikant Parsekar had assured to make the hospital fully functional within a year from its inauguration. But four years have passed and the hospital still faces shortage of doctors and other facilities.
Despite efforts, medical superintendent Pradip Shinkre was not available to comment.
