The season’s first turtle nesting pit was set up at Agonda beach in the early hours of Thursday.
According to sources, an Olive Ridley turtle arrived at the beach at about 5.45 am and after looking around, began digging a pit and laid its eggs before heading back to the sea.
Forest guards, who had observed the nesting from a distance, recovered 145 turtle eggs and transferred them to a the Pit 1 near the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (TRC) at Agonda beach.
South Goa Marine Range (SGMR), with Galgibage as its headquarters, operates TRCs with nesting sites at Agonda and Galgibaga.
According to SGMR officer incharge/RFO Rajesh Naik, the nesting at Agonda on Thursday was the first of the season.
