The Election Commission of India will place before the High Court of Bombay at Goa a detailed account of how the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being carried out across states and Union Territories, with senior Supreme Court advocate Ashutosh Kumbhakoni being deputed to assist the Bench.
The development came during the hearing of a writ petition filed by St Cruz resident Paresh Salgaonkar and his family members, who challenged the exclusion of their names from the electoral roll after the SIR exercise.
When the matter came up for further hearing on Tuesday, the ECI’s representative in Goa, Advocate Gaurish Agni, sought an adjournment, informing the Division Bench of Justice Valmiki Menezes and Justice Amit Jamsandekar that the Commission wanted its senior counsel from Delhi to appear before the court, either in person or through video conferencing.
The counsel is expected to explain to the Bench the procedure followed during the SIR exercise, besides detailing how the revision is being conducted in other states and Union Territories. The Bench accordingly adjourned the matter to October 13.
