MARGAO: With the North Main sewage line in a damaged state and the new line still awaiting commissioning, residents of Madel ward fear the worst with monsoons just weeks away and there’s no solution to the rampant discharge of sewage in the fields and water bodies by the sewage department.
Margao Municipal Council ward councilor representing Madel, Clara Fernandes, pointed out that residents of Madel will have to face the overflowing sewage chambers in the monsoons. “I have shown to the municipal officials how sewage is directly going into the storm water drains at Madel. Since the North Main line is in a damaged state and work on the new line is underway, the sewage department has found a convenient way of releasing sewage water in the fields, which then finds its way into the drain,” she said.
Saying that Madelkars have been facing a constant mess on the sewage front, more so during the monsoons, Clara said the situation turns worse during the rains because of the high ground water table. “During the monsoons, we find the sewage chambers in a damaged state and overflowing, blocking the exit points to Madel,” she said, while saying that it’s not uncommon to hear residents complaining of skin infections and other issues during the monsoons.
The ward councillor also raised the issue of mosquito menace facing the ward, saying people of Madel are yet to get relief from this.
