Motorists were left fuming after being caught up in a major traffic jam at Vasco on Saturday morning on account of sewage work by the PWD.
While the PWD has taken up sewage works at many locations in Vasco, most works are being carried out in the middle of the road, frequent traffic jams.
However, the traffic jam on Saturday morning was severe and lasted for about four hours after it was decided to have a one-lane traffic to felicitate the sewage work.
Traffic police present at the location found it difficult to handle the situation.
Motorists and residents have now requested PWD authorities to carry out the work at night or to expedite the work.
A source in the PWD confirmed that work on sewage pipelines was in progress since the last 10 days.
"We are replacing old pipelines with new ones which are broader and stronger and works are being carried out from Vaddem Lake to Vasco. At many locations, roads are being dug and this causes traffic jams. We are trying to expedite our work," said the source.
A motorist, Jairam Pednekar, said the traffic jam in Vasco on Saturday was a frustrating experience.
"During peak hours, local buses usually try to overtake from the wrong side causing further congestion. We also have bikes trying to squeeze through on either sides and we have oncoming traffic as well.”
“The situation is aggravated when the road is turned into a one-lane traffic during such works and long queues of vehicles are on either side of the road," said Pednekar.
Another motorist, Ramesh Naik, said many cars and bikes utilise the closed section of the one-way road to park vehicles.
"They park in a haphazard manner and when the road is reopened, the space still continues to be occupied by the parked vehicles, causing severe congestion.”
“We have local buses, heavy vehicles and private cars all rushing thorough and almost brushing each other. A minor accident can leave traffic further stranded. Authorities must work out solutions to these traffic jams,” said Naik.
