As the Margao wholesale fish market continues to operate in a stinking environment with no sign of commissioning the redeveloped market, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Thursday alleged that SGPDA is not inaugurating the renovated wholesale fish market for fear of losing haftas.
Saying that haftas are allegedly being collected from the wholesale fish market, Sardesai told the media that he would expose the hafta racket to show who are the beneficiaries of the hafta collection.
Saying that the SGPDA wholesale fish market is lying in a complete mess, Sardesai, who is a member of the SGDPA, said the PDA Chairman, MLA Krishna Salkar has allotted the tender of housekeeping service to a BJP worker for Rs 2.5 lakh.
“The market is located in Madel-Fatorda, but the PDA has appointed a contractor from Ponda taluka. The market is rotting for want of maintenance. The residents of Madel are facing the brunt, while BJP workers are awarded tenders”, he said.
He added: The BJP and the government are surviving on the haftas collected from the wholesale fish market. On the other hand, the people of Fatorda are facing the nuisance. When allegations of formalin were made some years ago, I had requested the government to shift the wholesale fish market to Old Mardol. We don’t want the market in our locality”.
Meanwhile, Sardesai told the media that he has spoken to PWD Minister Digambar Kamat and Superintendent of police, South Santosh Desai how the iconic Tinto building at Old market is converted into a 'godgoddo' gambling den.
