Goa Police on Thursday arrested a 23-year-old shack worker after a video showing him making sexually coloured remarks at a woman tourist on Baga beach went viral on social media, drawing widespread outrage.
The incident occurred in the early hours of October 24, between 2 am and 2.40 am, when the complainant, identified as Soumya Khanna, was allegedly approached by the accused, who made inappropriate and offensive comments about her ethnicity and asked lewd questions regarding her “rates per night.”
According to police, the remarks and behaviour caused the tourist to feel unsafe and humiliated in public.
The video of the incident, which surfaced online recently, prompted immediate action from the Tourist Police Unit (TPU) and Calangute Police Station.
The accused was later identified as Atendra Singh (23), a native of Bharatpur, Rajasthan, who was employed at a shack in Baga.
He was taken into custody and booked under Sections 75, 78, and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 for outraging the modesty of a woman and using obscene language.
In an official statement, the Goa Police reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on such incidents.
“Goa Police does not tolerate harassment or indecent behaviour towards women. Stern action is taken on each and every complaint,” a police spokesperson said.
