After a long gap of two years amid the Covid pandemic, mythological floats enthralled thousands of people during the Vasco Shigmotsav on Tuesday evening.
The Vasco Shigmo floats, organised by Murgao Nagrik Shigmotsav Samiti (MNSS), were flagged off by MNSS President Vijay Nagvekar and other committee members after prayers at Lord Damodar temple in Vasco.
Different mythological floats were paraded along the route from the St Andrew’s Church Square to Vasco Railway station along the Swatantra Path in Vasco.
A strong police force was deployed during the Shigmotsav parade, while many domestic tourists enjoyed the Romtamel mythological floats being paraded in the port town.
The Shigmo at Vasco saw the participation from 63 groups and individuals, including the Romtamel (8 groups), folk dance (7 groups) and mythological floats (17 groups) while the fancy dress (31 persons) competition was conducted in front of a huge stage set up opposite the Vasco railway station.
Speaking to reporters, Mormugao Nagrik Shigmotsav Samiti President Vijay Nagvekar said it is believed the beats of drums and dhol would drive away negative energy from around the place.
"We have some beautiful mythological floats being paraded and various competitions for folk dance and fancy dress. Winning or losing is not important but the main thing is the participation in this auspicious event,” said Nagvekar.
Vasco MLA Daji Salkar said it is important that future generations know about the different traditions and cultures of the State through such festivities.
"These floats depict our history and our past. Shigmo floats not only keep our traditions alive but also provides a platform for various artists to display and showcase their talent. A lot of women have also participated in the Shigmo this time," said Salkar.
