Shivaji row: Betul Shiv Premis lodge complaint against priest

Delegation demands apology from Velim MLA for his utterances in Legislative Assembly

MARGAO
A group of Shiv Premis from Betul on Friday evening lodged a complaint against Fr Bolmax Pereira for his statement against Maratha Warrior Shivaji Maharaj.

The delegation also demanded an apology from Velim MLA Cruz Silva for his utterances in the Legislative Assembly on the question of government spending money on events commemorating Shivaji Maharaj.

Condemning the statement made by Fr Bolmax, Sudhakar Joshi and others pointed out that the priest has no right to say that Shivaji Maharaj is not a God. “Who is the priest to say that Shivaji is not a God? Fr Bolmax has hurt the sentiments of Hindu community and the Shiv Premis. He had no right to insult Shivaji by saying he is not a God,” he said.

The delegation also took strong exception to the purported statements made by Velim MLA Cruz Silva on the floor of the House questioning the expenses made by the government on the commemoration of Shiv Jayanti. “People of Velim have been leaving peacefully over the years. Statements made by the Velim MLA are intended to divide the people of Velim on communal lines,” the delegation said, while demanding that the MLA tender an apology on the floor of the House.
