PORVORIM

Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza stated that it is not possible for the State government to increase health facilities in primary health centres in the State due to dearth of doctors and nurses.

“Without improving basic infrastructure, it does not make any sense in opening more health facilities in primary health centres. Doctor and nurses are not willing to go to villages and hence the State government is not in a position to provide health facilities to the rural areas,” said D’Souza after inaugurating the non-bedded primary health centre at Porvorim.

D’Souza further said it was not possible for the State government to open trauma and gynecology cell at Porvorim Health Centre due to shortage of doctors and nurses. “Porvorim is near to Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim, where all the medical facilities are available,” he said.

Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the residents of Porvorim were required to go to Aldona Primary Health Centre for petty health issues, obtaining no objection certificates, etc, and in the process waste a lot of time and money.

“National Highway 17 passes through Porvorim and a portion of the road from Mandovi bridge to Alto Porvorim Bazaar has become an accident-prone zone. The State government should open a trauma cell in this primary health centre to attend to accident cases and a gynec cell too to attend to night emergency cases,” said Khaunte.

“There are many senior citizens in Porvorim and there is a need of day care centre. The government should look into these aspects,” said Khaunte.

Porvorim Primary Health Centre in-charge Dr Roshan Nazareth gave details of the health facilities available at the health centre and urged the residents to avail of the benefits.

Dr Marina Fernandes welcomed the gathering, Arpita Korgaonkar compered the programme, while Vishnu Chari proposed the vote of thanks.
