With the shortlisted contractors playing truant, the Margao Municipal Council has decided to float fresh tender to construct the long-delayed multi-level parking project and also hold a fresh auction to shortlist sopo contractor to collect sopo for the remaining period of the current financial year.
Resuming charge of office after attending a two-day advanced training on waste segregation technology at Diu, Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai on Friday told Municipal officials to float a fresh tender immediately so that the process of awarding the work order to the new contractor is completed by November-end.
“Since the contractor has played truant by not turning up to submit the performance guarantee, I have told the Municipal officials to set in motion the process to float a new tender for the construction of the Rs 7 crore multi-level parking project behind the MMC building,” Babita told The Goan on Friday after her meeting with officials.
She said a set deadline has been set for the civic officials to obtain the NIT and other approvals from the PWD superintending engineer at the earliest so that the fresh tender is floated by October-end itself if possible.
The Margao Municipal Council had pinned hopes on the contractor shortlisted by the civic body to execute the ambitious project after the contractor assured TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai to complete the project by Goa Statehood Day on May 30 next year.
In the meantime, the MMC chairperson directed the concerned officials to set in motion the process to hold a fresh auction for the sopo collection given that the civic body has terminated the contract with the outgoing contractor for failing to pay the installments. “I have told the officials to shortlist a new bidder by October so that the new contractor can take care of the collection of sopo for the remaining five months of the current financial year,” she said, adding that the work of collecting sopo is presently being undertaken departmentally by the
municipal staff.
