Though the pre-monsoon showers disrupted power supply at night, there were few complaints as the lower temperatures brought about the much-needed respite from the scorching heat.
But with the big drains and nullahs will filled with silt, concerns were raised about the incomplete pre-monsoon works by the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).
“Monsoon is around the corner and the council has failed to take up cleaning of the main gutter at Kattem-Baina and this could lead to overflowing of the gutter on the roads during rains,” said Ramesh Naik of Baina.
Agnelo Fernandes of Sasmollem said the gutter between Mangor and Baina lake had not been cleaned by the council. “Every monsoon, the nullah is not cleaned and gutter water floods the main road. The muck makes the road inaccessible to residents and students,” said Fernandes.
Residents from other parts of Vasco had similar concerns.
When contacted, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said the work to clean all major gutters and drains of every ward in the municipality is going on in full swing and is expected to be completed within the next few days.
“We might face some water-logging problems at Baina and in the city due to the fresh flow of muck, but it will be tackled immediately,” he said.
Traffic disrupted, trees uprooted in Bicholim, surrounding areas
BICHOLIM: Several trees were uprooted in Bicholim and surrounding areas after heavy pre-monsoon rains struck the taluka on Monday morning.
Traffic was disrupted on many roads as the uprooted trees blocked the roads, which some people suffered losses after trees came crashing down on their homes. Electricity cables were also damaged at many places, disrupting power supply till evening. The Bicholim fire service was busy on duty on Monday and attended to a number of calls.
Incidents of uprooted trees were reported at Vathadev, Sarvan main road, Karapur, Calvim-Aldona, Chorao and also in Keri-Sattari.
J D’Souza from Calvim suffered a loss of about Rs 30,000 when a mango tree got uprooted and damaged the first floor of his house. At Sarvan, traffic on the main road was blocked for nearly an hour as a Gulmohar tree got uprooted and fell on the main road.
