Residents of Sao Jose de Areal on Sunday questioned the installation of a ‘Return and Refund point’ booth near the panchayat ghar, pointing out that the structure has remained shut since it was installed around two months ago.
The residents sought to know whether taxpayers’ money had been spent on setting up the facility and questioned the purpose of the booth.
Social activist Peter Viegas further pointed out that calls to the telephone number displayed on the booth went unanswered, raising questions over the objective behind its installation.
“Since villagers have no idea about the objective behind setting up the Return and Refund point, the concerned authorities should immediately shed light on its purpose. The authorities should also explain whether the booth has been set up with public money and, if so, who will be held accountable for the wastage of public funds,” he said.
Viegas and other residents demanded that the authorities either operationalise the booth or take steps to ensure that the structure is properly secured.
