Four panchayats in Bicholim taluka have declared a lockdown in a bid to control the spread of Covid.
The panchayats of Karapur-Sarvan, Mulgao, Mayem and Pilgao announced a lockdown and declared all non-essential activities will be kept closed till May 9. Shops selling essentials items would remain for a short duration, to enable people purchase groceries and essential items.
Meanwhile, the lockdown enforced by the municipal councils in Bicholim and Sankhali evoked full response, as all shops selling vegetables, fruits, flowers, fish, groceries and all shops remained closed on Wednesday. National banks and co-operative societies, however, remained open.
“The people have responded in full support of the lockdown and all non-essential transactions will be closed till Sunday. The next decision will be taken at a review meeting on Sunday, said Speaker Rajesh Patnekar in the presence of Bicholim Municipal Council Chairperson Kundan Falari.
Meanwhile, Sankhali Municipal Council Chairperson Raya Parsekar also thanked the people for their response to the lockdown.
SMC Councillor Dharmesh Sagalani has appealed to people to cooperate as the chain needs to be broken to save the people from the epidemic.
Some shops were open for milk and other necessities at Sankhali in the morning and were then closed for the day.
Both Parsekar and Sagalani have appealed to people to get in touch with them if they needed any assistance.
