Sources have disclosed that the SIT is in the process of putting two and two together based on the M B Shah report on Goa mining scam and that the politician is likely to be named by the investigation agency over the coming weeks.
The Shah Commission report stated that ore trader Imran Khan operated as a ‘proxy' for a politician of the then ruling party. Sources further disclosed that the SIT has the then mining minister Digambar under its scanner.
Under Kamat, the mines dept had approved the transfer of the mining lease located at Curpem in Sanguem taluka to Khan through Power of Attorney in violation of the law. The transfer was affected on the basis of Kamat's notings.
It has been reliably learnt that the SIT is in possession of these file notings made by Kamat, who was then the Mines Minister.
At the time of transfer through POA, the mining lease was in dispute among heirs of the deceased lease holder. Despite the pending dispute, one heir transferred the lease to Khan through POA while Kamat approved the transfer, sources revealed.
Khan has extracted more than eight lakh metric tonnes ore amounting to Rs 320 crore, according to the SIT.
