Verna police arrested five officers of Zuari Agro Chemicals Limited (ZAC) and a supervisor of the contractor, in connection with a blast in the condensate tank at the plant which claimed three lives on Tuesday.
Those arrested have been identified as plant manager D S Usgaonkar, Safety Manager G S Lotlikar, Safety Officer R J Shirate, S Bicholkar and M Prabhudesai under Sections 336 and 304 (a). Police had earlier arrested Pradhan, a supervisor of the contractor, in the connection and he was later released on bail.
"In regards to the ZACL condensate tank blast that led to the death of three workers, Verna police registered an FIR against the contractor, who was in contract with ZACL for maintenance works and also on the immediate supervisory staff of the company,” Mormugao DySP Nilesh Rane informed reporters on Thursday.
“Investigation is in progress and on Wednesday one supervisor, Pradhan, who was present at the site during the incident and has failed in his duties to supervise the works properly, has been arrested.”
“All roles of the contractor and ZACL management are being investigated and only after investigating each and everyone's responsibility and negligent roles, we can say something. More arrests are, however, likely in the incident," said DySP Rane.
