Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) leader and Power Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar has defended the State’s Rs 890 crore project to introduce smart electricity meters, urging people to cooperate despite rising opposition.
The installation drive by the Goa Electricity Department has sparked protests in several areas, with residents raising concerns about billing, privacy and costs.
Many fear the new system could lead to higher bills or technical problems.
Dhavalikar dismissed these concerns as “misconceptions”. “People are opposing because they have no experience with smart meters. Once they see the benefits, they will understand,” he said.
The minister highlighted the scale of the investment, noting that the government has already committed Rs 890 crore.
“The government has invested heavily in this project. We cannot go back. People must cooperate for Goa’s future,” he said.
According to Dhavalikar, smart meters will improve transparency and efficiency.
“Smart meters will help stop power theft, provide accurate billing and improve load management,” he explained. He added that the technology would reduce fluctuations and improve reliability.
The initiative is part of a wider national effort to modernise power infrastructure across India. Dhavalikar said Goa must align with these reforms to ensure long-term sustainability.
“This is not just about today. It is about the next generation. We are preparing Goa for the future,” he said.
However, despite these assurances, scepticism remains, with citizens continuing to seek greater consultation and clarity before the rollout is enforced.
