Thick smoke from coal-laden wagons caused a scare in Vasco on Thursday. According to locals, the coal laden wagons were stationed at the Railways Goods Shed at Baina, when thick smoke was noticed at the stationary wagons.
Panic-stricken residents in the area notified the railways and also alerted the fire station.
A fire brigade from the Vasco fire station went to the site and later sprayed water on the wagons.
Sources said this has been the second such incident of smoke emanating from stationary coal wagons at the yard in Baina within a week.
Speaking to reporters, Vasco Station Manager Ramdas Gudemane said there was no fire incident reported as was being speculated.
"I got a message at around 10.40 am that some smoke is coming out of the coal-laden wagons at the goods shed and we called the fire brigade who began dousing the smoke with water. There is no loss as such and there was no fire incident as well," said Gudemane.
Vasco Fire Officer Vishwas Ashtekar confirmed that a fire tender had gone to the site.
“We had a similar incident in the early hours of May 10. We think the smoke in the coal wagon was due to the heat. There is no loss in the incident and as of now and the issue is resolved," said Ashtekar.
